I.   All Indiana University Campuses, Housing Fire Safety Systems - Click here to link to the Housing Information Web Site.

II.  Number of Fire Drills

One fire drill per semester per housing unit. Not less than 158 drills per year.

III. Fire Safety Policies

In order to minimize the potential for fires at university student housing facilities, the following items are prohibited:

  • Portable space heaters
  • Barbeque grills, hibachis, smokers and related accessories including lighter fluids and similar type products.
  • Any open flame device or object including candles, incense sticks and related accessories.
  • Hot plates, slow cookers, deep fryers, electric skillets, electric woks, griddles, sandwich makers/grills, toaster ovens and related accessories.
  • Flammable or combustible liquids.
  • Fireworks, firecrackers, rockets, flares, sparklers.
  • Halogen lamps.
  • Combustible ceiling/wall tapestries.
  • Live Christmas trees or non fire retardant artificial Christmas trees.

Special events, inside or out, may require an Entertainment Permit from the Homeland Security Office before approval to hold the event is granted by the university. This procedure is posted at the Entertainment Permit Web Site.

Inspections are made of student housing to encourage fire safety.

IV.  Procedures for Student Evacuation

  • Call 911,
  • get dressed,
  • take your room key,
  • feel the door to see if it is hot (flames outside!),
  • check for smoke,
  • alert others while exiting,
  • be accounted for in your predetermined ࣨsafe location.ࣩ

Indiana University policy includes posting of EMERGENCY EVACUATION signage in prominent locations in all buildings including a ࣨYou Are Hereࣩ drawing of the building.

V.   Fire Safety Training for Students, Faculty and Staff

Training on evacuation procedures is provided at student orientation and reinforced throughout the year by Resident Assistants. The Office of Insurance, Loss Control & Claims also provides training in large group situations covering the operation of portable fire extinguishers, alarms systems and sprinkler systems.

VII.  Future Improvements in Fire Safety

The addition of NFPA 13 compliant fire suppression systems throughout all of housing is one of our goals and the systems are added as buildings are renovated.
